v2026.10.05.1 October 5, 2026
Leave the house owner out of Ninja's story
Number the missing-cat What's New entry v2026.10.05.1, released with the first conversation
Add the idea When a Cat Goes Missing
Details
Suggested by Michael, a newsletter reader (credited by first name): reaching the people who’ve met a missing cat, private sightings, noticing when a stray stops turning up, remembering a cat that doesn’t come back, keeping alerts safe from scams and misuse, and whether Stray Cats should one day cover all pets. Linked from Stray, Pet, or Somewhere in Between?; v2026.10.05.2 What’s New entry.Add the stories and ideas from the first conversation
Details
From the first Let’s talk conversation, with Les (credited by first name):
- New story: Ninja, the talk of the town (no details of the house owner’s finances)
- New idea: Education & Awareness (sterilisation, accidental and deliberate poisoning, black cats, feeding and wildlife), with Carlitos as its cover
- New cat card: Carlitos; Tenkilo’s card explains the name; Ciccio’s notes she’s a girl despite the name
- Care Network, Privacy & Animal Safety, Stray or Pet, Encounters and The Building Blocks: love isn’t money, poisoning, many homes, cradle to grave
- Spanish: Ciccio is “gata” throughout, and in the NotebookLM prompt
- v2026.10.05.1 What’s New entry
v2026.10.05 October 5, 2026
Make the invitation to talk more prominent
Details
- Add Let’s Talk / Hablemos to the top menu, in place of Tags (tags stay on each page and in search)
- Add a “Have an idea or a cat story? Let’s talk” box to the home page introduction and the Ideas page (talk-invite shortcode)
- Turn the reply box’s chat line into a second button, next to “Send a reply”, at the end of every story and idea
- Update the What’s New entry
Explain that transcripts are summarised with AI, then deleted
Say cameras are optional in chats
Invite readers to book a 30-minute chat
Details
- New Let’s talk page (Hablemos in Spanish): what a chat is like, how it’s transcribed, and how what people say is and isn’t used, with a button to book on Calendly (params.chatURL). Chats are in English; the Spanish page says so and invites Spanish speakers to write instead.
- Add a “Let’s talk” section to Give Feedback and a line to the reply box at the end of every story
- Add the v2026.10.05 What’s New entry
v2026.10.04.5 October 4, 2026
Add the audio deep dives in English and Spanish
Details
- Replace the 20-minute YouTube deep dive on The Building Blocks with the new NotebookLM deep dives, hosted on the site with the 1x / 1.5x player: Remembering the Cats Nobody Owns (38 minutes) in English, and Memoria colectiva para gatos sin dueño (24 minutes) in Spanish
- Convert them from 256 to 96 kbps for speech (74 MB and 47 MB down to 25 MB and 16 MB) to keep the site light
- Point the About page’s deep dive links at the new sections
- Add the v2026.10.04.5 What’s New entry
v2026.10.04.4 October 4, 2026
Add the 90-second audio introductions with speed buttons

- Add a listen shortcode: an audio player with 1x and 1.5x speed buttons (assets/js/listen.js), in both languages
- Update the home page and The Building Blocks links to the new length
- Add the v2026.10.04.4 What’s New entry
Add full NotebookLM prompts in English and Spanish
Details
Replace the short Brief and Deep Dive prompts in the README with complete, copy-ready prompts in both languages: a warm, curious tone; the facts to get right (an idea, not an app; the cat’s wellbeing first; the cats’ real names); what to avoid (comparisons with other products, invented details, guessing the cats’ sex, talking about the audio itself); pronunciation; and a structure that ends with what’s new, a gentle mention of Saibo, and an invitation to reply.
v2026.10.04.3 October 4, 2026
Start the NotebookLM page with what's new, and add update prompts
Details
Open each NotebookLM source page with the newest What’s New entry, so overviews made after a major update can cover it without editing. Replace the README prompt with ready-to-paste Brief and Deep Dive prompts in English and Spanish, keeping the one-page prompt as an option.Publish the whole site as one NotebookLM source per language
Details
Add hidden pages, /notebooklm/ and /es/notebooklm/, holding the text of every story, idea and the About, Feedback and Saibo pages, with titles and addresses, in reading order, so each language’s NotebookLM notebook needs a single website source. Add a README checklist for making audio overviews of the whole project or one page, in English and Spanish.
v2026.10.04.2 October 4, 2026
Add a What's New page and label new and updated pages
Details
- Turn the release notes into What’s New (Novedades in Spanish), written for readers: one dated section per update, listing what’s New and Updated with links. It’s in the menu, linked from the home page and footer, and findable in search; old release-notes links redirect.
- Move the commit log to its own Change history page, linked from What’s New
- Show a “New” badge on pages published in the last 14 days (after the
launch day) and an “Updated” date on pages with
updated:in their front matter, on the pages and in the home page lists - Mark the pages changed on October 4 as updated
- Update the README, CLAUDE.md and comments for the new release steps
v2026.10.04.1 October 4, 2026
Rework the site around meeting a cat, for the cat's benefit
Details
- New idea, Meeting a Cat: one photo gets you the cat’s card; a list of cats you’ve met; sharing a card so friends can follow the cat; learning coats; gentle prompts; and what it won’t do (no popularity, no exact spots, no public photo links)
- New story, A photo is an introduction
- New principles: meeting, not owning; fun is the doorway, not the destination; no popularity contests
- Grow Encounters, Cat Identity, The Care Network, Stray or Pet, Privacy & Animal Safety, Open Data & Tech and The Building Blocks (new concepts: Meeting, Card), keeping all the original ideas
- Update the About page, home introduction and Feedback questions
- Add cat cards for the named cats (data/cats.yaml, cat-cards shortcode) and the v2026.10.04.1 release notes
v2026.10.04 October 4, 2026
Number the version fix release notes v2026.10.04
Add the v2026.10.03.3 release notes
Fix the site version and release notes for merged pull requests
Details
Releases are now tagged on pull request merge commits, which the change history skipped, so the footer showed v2026.10.03.1+dev instead of v2026.10.03.2 and recent changes were listed as not yet released. Assign each commit to the oldest release tag that contains it, read the version from the tags on HEAD, and keep each release’s commits together.
v2026.10.03.2 October 3, 2026
Name the cats in the photos
Details
- Name the cats in the photo descriptions and captions, in English and Spanish: Ciccio, Hootie, Lucia, Mika Ella, Ninja, Tenkilo, and Mountain Lion, whose real name nobody knows
- Correct the “Ninja, Naranja, or Milo?” cover: it shows Mountain Lion, not Ninja
- Let the gallery shortcode take one description per photo (alts=“a | b”)
- Add the v2026.10.03.2 release notes
Explain in the README that there's no software yet
Details
Open with a note that Stray Cats is at the concept stage and the repo holds only the website, so nobody clones it expecting an app. Add a “Get involved” section pointing to the site, Discussions and Issues, and group the run-locally and publishing instructions under “Working on the website”.Build the site on every pull request
Details
Add a “Build site” check (.github/workflows/pr-build.yml) that builds the site, with the same pinned Hugo version and change history as a release, on each pull request into main. Branch protection requires it to pass before merging.Switch to a pull request workflow
Details
Same workflow as evnsteven_app, adapted for a single collaborator: one short-lived branch per change and a PR into a protected main, with no approval required. Add CLAUDE.md (and AGENTS.md linking to it) with the conventions, and a “Making changes” section in the README.
v2026.10.03.1 October 3, 2026
Add the NotebookLM audio overviews
Details
- Embed the five-minute overview (“A Social Network for Stray-ish Cats”) on the About page, and point to it from the home page introduction
- Embed the 20-minute deep dive (“Why Street Cats Is a Hard Problem to Solve”) on The Building Blocks
- Note on both that the voices are AI-generated, and on the Spanish pages that the audio is in English
- Use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced (no-cookie) embeds
- Add the v2026.10.03.1 release notes
v2026.10.03 October 3, 2026
Add calendar versioning and release notes
Details
Same approach as terrybrennen.com, adapted to GitHub Pages:
- Tag releases vYYYY.MM.DD[.N] (Puerto Escondido time);
npm run deployruns scripts/release.mjs, which checks main is committed and pushed, tags, builds locally, then pushes the tag (removing it if anything fails) - Deploy from release tags instead of every push to main
- Add a hidden Release Notes page in English and Spanish, with a change history grouped by release (scripts/git-history.mjs, git-history shortcode)
- Show the site version in the footer next to a Release notes link
- Tag releases vYYYY.MM.DD[.N] (Puerto Escondido time);
Show stories on the home page in reading order, and tidy up
Details
- List stories (in reading order) then ideas on the home page, with prev/next links following the same order
- Rename the “Updates” section to “Stories”
- Fix the Instagram handle (mimos_cat_sanctuary)
- Stop claiming the site runs on its own domain
- Wrap the menu on narrow screens instead of hiding items off the edge
- Replace deprecated Hugo language keys and pin Hugo in the deploy workflow
Dedicate the project to Saibo
Details
- Add a “For Saibo” page (EN/ES) with his dates and photos
- Dedication line in the footer and a section on the About page
- Move Saibo’s photos off the stray-cat pages; new Encounters cover
- Keep the text-link underline off photo links
Add cat theme, subtle animations and feedback email
Details
- Warm cream/ginger palette with amber dark mode, Nunito type, cat logo and favicons, paw-print bullets and footer trail, perched cat on the reply box
- Subtle motion (page fades, scroll reveals, hover lifts, blinking logo cat, tail swish), disabled for prefers-reduced-motion
- Turn on the “Respond to this idea” button and email links; encode mailto subjects with %20
- Show the full home title (unclamp) and hide the mobile menu scrollbar
Add cat photos, search previews, search icon and Instagram link
Details
- Convert illustrated pages to bundles with covers, inline photos and galleries (photo/gallery shortcodes), shared by EN and ES
- Search results show section, date and a highlighted text preview
- Search menu item gets a magnifying-glass icon
- Link the @mimos_cat_santuary Instagram account
Add Spanish translation of the site
Details
English stays at /, Spanish at /es/ with Spanish slugs. Translates all pages, menus, home intro and the “Respond to this idea” box (i18n/), and makes the language switcher link to the current page’s translation.Point site at GitHub repo and Pages URL
Details
Set baseURL to the GitHub Pages subpath, link the GitHub icon, edit links, Discussions and Issues, and resolve root-relative content links so they work under /straycats/.Initial Stray Cats site with Hugo and PaperMod
Details
Blog for collecting thoughts, feedback and ideas about an open-source, non-profit app for tracking and identifying stray cats (and dogs). Includes story posts, idea pages, a “Respond to this idea” box, and a GitHub Pages deploy workflow.
